German Barbarians :: essays research papers
Just outside the boundaries of the Roman empire of the first and second centuries, beyond the Rhine River, and occupying the area of Central Europe of what is today Germany, lived the tribes of the Germanic people. In Germania, the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus gave an account of the lifestyles and organization of these peculiar barbarians. These descendants of modern Germans proved peculiar in that they adopted many qualities typical of barbaric cultures, yet they simultaneously practiced virtues more befitting of advanced civilizations, values more ethical than even the Roman empire of the time. The German warriors had a rigid code that defined how to live honorable lives and shameful acts to avoid committing, and the warriors also adhered to strict tradition in their relationship with their king or chief. à à à à à The climate of Germany suited the warriors well. The combination of ââ¬Å"wild scenery and harsh climateâ⬠(Tacitus, Germania) had given the barbarians an inherent endurance towards cold and hunger over time. To cope with their surroundings, the warriors had developed powerful physiques, yet their abundant resources of strength and stamina proved not to be a source of pleasure for them, for the warriors had ââ¬Å"no fondness for feats of endurance or for hard workâ⬠(Tacitus, Germania). In earthly matters, Germanyââ¬â¢s apparent lack of precious metals made the warriors quite utilitarian in regards to physical possession. They preferred silver to gold, as silver could be more easily fashioned into useful objects. Only the tribes of warriors on the borders of the Roman empire recognized gold and silver as trading commodities, while the ââ¬Ëbackwoodsââ¬â¢ tribes traded through the simple practice of barter, yielding one item in exchange for anot her (Tacitus, Germania). à à à à à The Germanic tribes were by no means idle people. Not content with the quietness characteristic of daily lives built on routine, ââ¬Å"for rest is unwelcome to the raceâ⬠(Tacitus, Germania), the tribes warred with their neighbors. In most cases, the tribes did not engage in voluntarily combat to gain or defend land or to right some alleged wrong against them; they mostly fought for two reasons. They first believed that it was easier to distinguish oneââ¬â¢s self in the uncertainty of war, rather than in the predictability of routine. So war became a way for the barbarians to prove their honor, or sometimes expose their shame, as the abandonment of the shield during combat was ââ¬Å"the height of disgraceâ⬠(Tacitus, Germania).

Then the environment for the child will be so calm no fights or disagreement in front of the child, no stressful atmosphere so the child will be happy and the child is not going to compare the unhappy life that has at home. Another point that they want to show is that the child learn to be responsible and independent very early because as being a single parent they teach the child to take care of themselves. Now that the opinions to be a single parent was exposing; it is important to know the benefits that brings to share the equal responsibility raising the child. Men and women were created equal essays
Men and women were created equal essays Men are not superior to women, they are equal in every way. Although it is true that society has stereotyped women into traditional roles, this preconceived notion, is totally false. Action to promote the concept of equality in our society needs to be taken. Women have been fighting for equality for many decades. As a result of this battle, some amazing transformations have taken place amongst the female gender. Women have become educated and over the last few decades have started to take active roles and their rightful place in society. They have made major inroads in working opportunities, including government, science and even the military. They are reshaping world history and are very proud. Internationally, women have achieved the highest office in several countries, such as: Indira Gandhi of India, Golda Meir of Israel, and Margaret Thatcher of Great Britain. Hilary Clinton is currently running for a senate seat in New York and if she is successful, could one day follow in her husbands footsteps and become the first female President of the United States. These women have all obtained equal roles and respect as leaders of their countries similar to Bill Clinton and Jean Chretien. Other examples of women who have favourably impacted on todays society are the late Mother Theresa and Lady Diana. These ladies tireless efforts for the good of humanity impacted the whole world. Only in the 20th century, and most recently in the last 20 years, have women overcome social barriers and been allowed to obtain a scientific education. Summary on the Article ââ¬ÅWhere the Jihad Lives Nowââ¬Â Essays
Summary on the Article ââ¬Å"Where the Jihad Lives Nowâ⬠Essays Summary on the Article ââ¬Å"Where the Jihad Lives Nowâ⬠Essay Summary on the Article ââ¬Å"Where the Jihad Lives Nowâ⬠Essay This article, Where the Jihad Lives Now, published in the October 29, 2007 issue of Newsweek talked about how the Taliban found refuge inside Pakistan.à This was written by Ron Moreau and Michael Hirsh. The first part of the article tells the story of how Benazir Bhutto, the Pakistanââ¬â¢s former prime minister was being in a danger inside their own government.à She said that the terrorists are trying to take over the Pakistan and they have to stop them.à But then she said she is not accusing the government but rather the people and certain individuals who are abusing their positions and powers (Moreau and Hirsh, 2007). The article continues as what is currently happening in Pakistan is being told.à It is said there that the government has no one to blame but itself it is the one who created the Islamist monster operating in the whole country now.à Thatââ¬â¢s why, Pakistan now is considered as the most dangerous country on earth. The Taliban and Qaeda now used the Pakistan as their base enabling jihadists to manoeuvre in the country and even beyond.à Taliban fighters now come and go as they please inside Pakistan.à Their injured are being nursed in private hospitals.à They even brought their families in there.à Some take courses like video production, English and computer technology.à They can shop for themselves if they want. Taliban fighters can attend services at mosques and study Qurââ¬â¢an (Moreau and Hirsh, 2007). But then, as stated in the article, it is no longer surprising to know that Pakistan might give special treatment to Taliban, because the countryââ¬â¢s intelligence officer and military men have maintained personal relations with the senior Taliban ever since 1980s in the occupation of Soviet in Afghanistan. Now the greatest danger in Pakistan is that the whole country which includes the senior politicians seems to be saying that what is happening is ââ¬Å"not our watch and not our war.â⬠à There seems an acceptance also that there are Taliban present in the country and every city.

The Molly Mcguires of Pennsylvania Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3250 words
The Molly Mcguires of Pennsylvania - Essay Example Though their life in Ireland was fraught with famine, poverty and arduous labor conditions, life in America was no less hard. At least in Ireland, they were not the subject of bigotry based simply on their heritage, accent or religion. Irish Catholics were thought of as almost sub-human. Two Catholic churches were burned to the ground while occupied in Philadelphia on May 6, 1844 causing 16 people to lose their lives. One of the only places in the country that the Irish were welcomed was in the coal mines of Pennsylvania where the owners of the mines were more than happy to employ those disenfranchised persons of Irish nationality who were desperate enough to take the dirty, dangerous jobs. It was in these Pennsylvania mining camps that the Molly Maguires experienced a rebirth in America. In 1860, following a typical tough day of mining, several Irishmen were heavily drinking and bemoaning the harsh working conditions at their usual location, the Girardville, PA lodge of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, a group established by Irish Catholics (Liljegren, 1964). The Irish working class had a long history of acting violently when they believed that they were being taken advantage of and the addition of being drunk and extremely unhappy served to light the fuse for actions against their oppressors. This is when they reformed the Molly Maguires, a group that had its roots in Ireland during the 1700ââ¬â¢s. This very secretive brotherhood was originally formed to exact retribution upon their cruel English landlords who were infamous in their treatment of Irish tenants. The English would actually kill their tenants so that they could raise the rent on new renters. The ââ¬ËMollies,ââ¬â¢ as they were commonly called, took this name from such an instance of cruelty. Molly Maguire was an aged widow who was one of the people being evicted from her home by one of these evil

End of Life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
End of Life - Essay Example On the contrary, the scope of end-of-life care essentially aims to define guidelines for caring for patients whose death is expected or anticipated rather than working towards enhancing their life expectancy (Grinyer, 2011). The emergence of ethical dilemmas in end-of-life care are essentially rooted in handling sensitive issues and challenges which surface when executing significant decisions regarding an individualââ¬â¢s life. Thorns (2010) highlights that ethical considerations in the implementation of the process focus upon understanding the patientââ¬â¢s state so as to choose whether to continue with the treatment procedures or discontinue their provision. Moreover, under such circumstances where an individual likely does not possess the required psychological understanding to make correct decisions, concerned attendants and doctors are faced with either challenging the patientsââ¬â¢ independence or agreeing with their choices thereby, granting them the right to possess complete control of their position and circumstances (Thorns, 2010). The emergence of ethical considerations in end-of-life care however, is not limited to the aforementioned assertions henceforth, this issue remains highly debated in scholarly circles; this paper applies three prominent ethical perspectives to critically evaluate and examine the concept from an ethical viewpoint. The utilitarian perspective explores theoretical issues from a multifaceted lens with reference to the concepts of end-of-life care and the role of doctors in the recognizing the independence and autonomy of patients with reference making their life decisions. As stated by Singer (2003) the nature of utilitarianism as a branch of consequentialism implies that the value of ethics in terms of each action or behavior is expected to be judged on an individual basis. In terms of examining the implications of adhering to utilitarianism the implications of the decision can be judged in a
